Can you change how the compass works?

Either I don't understand how it works, or it's wrong. In a room/realm, for example 33x33, compass goes from the beginning of the realm as 0 and ends with 32, why is it like that? Why can't it go from 1 to 33? I don't get it and I hope you understood what I said.
