Mine and then build with what you mine...IMO, don't waste your time doing half slabs, as you don't have anything useful when you are done...build stuff that you like. You'll also be crafting as you build, so you will gain xp from crafting if you don't use craftmax.
Well you can only do this if you have 1k and it's the right time of the year but you level up pretty quickly if you enter building competitions ( that is if you change your mind lot, like me)
Do your daily quests which gives you 50c per quest. Sell the items that you mine...stone ores and oil are always in high demand. If you mine a lot you get free cubits while you mine. If you are on a mobile, you can do the offers to get free cubits. There are plenty of ways to earn cubits in game...you don't need to beg for them.
