Pet reverted back to level 0, is this normal?

So I decided that it would be a great time to level up my pumpkin pet to get it to lvl 45 from level 36, but when I went to take it out of its kennel it seemed rather small than before. I took the pet out and it was at level 0, this is pretty confusing because aren't pets supposed to stay at their level from the last time one has put it back to level another pet? Is this a bug or what? ._.
