So in part of the overhaul of various things we've modified chat (first being tested on web) to allow emoticon and kidzchat icons in lines like other text chat applications. So you can now do this :-) sort of thing where the happy face is in the line etc... And we've improved the interface a little (I hope). We're rolling this out slowly across platforms. Steam will get it next and then mobile last. Platforms that don't support emoticons yet will just not show them for the time being. Parental options have been changed to "only show emoticons" instead of only show kidzchat lines. While this may seem strange as an option it can be good if you don't want to see any text, but its probably not something most players will use.
