Its your fault for not checking and watering them every 24h
The water on the soil will remain for less than 24hours however the whole cycle resets after 24h since you last watered them
You can water blocks with no plants yes, and i covered it in another thread..However the method you mentioned is not a bug. When you water a almost grown plant, you will keep the soil wet if the plant grows faster than the time soil dries up.
If you plant on such soil your seed will be watered for 24h but you will need to rewater them after that unless you want them dead

Just to inform, not to teach again incase you know.

Watered soil that has plant on it remain watered for aprox. 8 hours.
Soil with full grown plants and with no plants never dry.
(I am also not sure about soil with no plants.)
Plants may survive on dry soil maximum 16 hours more.
After 16 hours on dry soil they die due to lack of water.
In total, their longest survive rate/time 24 hours or simply a day.
Those measurements not apply if you have a sprinkler watering soils.
Small sprinklers water 4 soils near by in a horizontal and vertical way.
Big one also cover diagonals so they water 8 soils in normal cases.

So if you don't have sprinklers in your farm you need to water your plant at least each day. You may rewater soil anytime, including the condition when its seen watered. After rewatering, soil remains rewatered 8 more hour.

Double watering not double the time that soil remain watered. Timers not add up to each other. It always dry after 8 hours.

Note: the time is given here (8,16,24 hours may or may not be exact, its aproximate time, do not plant and water exactly based on these vaules and blame me later on if they die, I just try to help.

About the bug, I am not sure about what you tried to explain cafe, but it looks like either you misunderstand the way how it works or I just did not understand where is the bug exactly. Can you clarify if its a bug or not and why its a bug pls. Its not that easy to realize it from the text your wrote if something bugged. It more looks like you missed a daily cycle and so your crops died due to that. But if I get it wrong pls clarify.

This happened to me too, i harvested my crops while the soil was still wet and since a crop isn't o it, the water wont disappear.
once the crop is replanted it takes a while for the water to disappear so you can water it. this is what happened to about 300 of my crops and the reason why i stopped farming for a bit.

I am still confused about how its a bug, but I guess I kinda see where it may go... Its a little bit messy to tell if I am right.

So you say soil remains wet after harvesting, and you plant on that soil, but not water seeds and are they die after 16 hours? In other words are textures show soil as wet but is it actually dry? Is that what you try to say as bug nations?

    Otherwice:

"once the crop is replanted it takes a while for the water texture to disappear, but you may still rewater them and it works same as watering after they dry, just start a 24 hour timer exactly after you water. And water again before 24 hour.

However, of course, if it was wet before you water, since its texture is same as previous you see no change, but it makes a change in terms of timing."

(Again info can be wrong, pls correct if its wrong)

Too lazy to read all the other comments so this might of been said.

If you water a full grown plant then remove it, the soil will stay watered until another seed is planted on it. The watered soil I thought would still work but maybe it doesn’t and that is what happens to you.
