when I want items to double, I just simply split them into 10's and hope for the best. xD

That way, there is a chance for them to double and there is not a huge amount of time wasted. :P

If they don't double, whatever, go mine some more! >:D

I once crafted 50 wind machines... But then I have the craftsman perk. IT DOUBLED INTO 100 :D
